Railings & stairs by Black Bear Deck & Fence

Railings & stairs

Railings with a view.

Black aluminum, cable or glass railings and stairs built to code, on new decks or as an upgrade to the one you have.

Railings & stairs

The part you touch every day.

Railing sets the look of the whole deck and stairs are where most decks get used hardest. We build both: black aluminum for the clean modern look, stainless cable or glass to keep a view open, cedar to match the wood, and stairs with landings where the grade calls for them.

  • “They completed my rooftop deck—over 630 sq. ft. including the stairs and lighting—in about a week, and I’m very happy with how everything turned out. … One thing I really appreciated was how transparent [the owner] was with the pricing. He clearly explained the material, labor, and waste costs, so there were no surprises.”

  • “I hired B&M Modern Works LLC for my front deck project in Renton, WA—a roughly 170 sq ft L-shaped composite deck attached to my house and garage, complete with railings, stairs, and city views—and I’m thrilled with the results. … The owner visited our site at least twice before starting to ensure everything aligned with our vision, discussing details like deck depth, joist spacing, and railing placement.”

    Saurabh S. · Thumbtack, March 2026

  • “We hired [Black Bear] to replace some stairs, railings and waterproofing under our deck, as well as refinishing our existing deck. [The owner] was very knowledgeable, really listened to what we wanted … His team was incredibly fast and hard working, even in the rain and cold and kept everything organized and clean while they were working.”

Common questions

Railings & stairs: questions.

Straight answers on cost, timing and materials for decks and fences in the Pacific Northwest. Still wondering? Call or text (425) 953-7012.

Which railing is lowest maintenance?

Black aluminum and glass need almost nothing beyond an occasional wash. Cable needs an occasional tension check. Cedar looks great but wants the same clean-and-seal as a cedar deck.

Can you replace just the railing on my deck?

Yes, as long as the deck itself is sound. We can swap old wood railing for aluminum, cable or glass and update the stairs at the same time.
