How much does a new deck cost in Everett and Snohomish County?
It depends on size, height, material and railing. A low cedar platform costs far less than a second-storey composite deck with stairs and cable railing. We come out, measure, and give you one written fixed price, free, so you know the real number for your yard before anything starts.
How long does it take to build a deck?
Most decks take one to two weeks on site once materials are in. Larger multi-level decks, covers or permitted builds can take longer; we give you the schedule with the estimate.
Composite or cedar: which should I choose?
Composite costs more up front but needs no staining or sealing and won't rot or splinter, which matters in our wet winters. Cedar is warmer and natural, costs less to build, and needs a clean and seal every few years. We build both and will tell you honestly which fits how you use the yard.
Do you build fences and gates too?
Yes. Six-foot cedar privacy fences, horizontal cedar fences and matching gates. Posts are set in concrete and gates are built and hung so they don't sag.
Do you replace or resurface old decks?
Yes. If the framing is sound we can resurface with new boards and railing; if it isn't, we tear out and rebuild. We check the structure during the estimate and tell you which one you need.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Black Bear Deck & Fence LLC holds Washington L&I contractor license BLACKBD746NJ (active), carries a $30,000 contractor bond and $1,000,000 in liability insurance, and is locally owned in Everett. You can check the license on the L&I Verify site.
What areas do you serve?
Everett and the rest of Snohomish County, plus King County: Lynnwood, Edmonds, Mill Creek, Mukilteo, Bothell, Marysville, Lake Stevens, Snohomish, Mountlake Terrace, Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Kirkland, Bellevue, Seattle and Arlington. We've also built in Renton, Issaquah and North Bend.
Do you repair decks and fences, or only build new?
Both. We fix rotted boards and framing, replace stairs and railings, waterproof under decks, and replace leaning fence posts and broken panels. If the frame isn't worth saving, we'll show you why and quote a rebuild instead.
Do you handle permits and inspections?
On permitted jobs we build to the approved plans, set footings and framing to code, and work with the city through inspections. Tell us at the estimate if your project needs a permit and we'll walk you through it.
Do you build rooftop and second-storey decks?
Yes. Rooftop decks, garage-top decks and second-storey decks with stairs are a regular part of our work, including lighting and railing.
Are you the same company as B&M Modern Works?
Yes. Black Bear Deck & Fence LLC is the same Washington business, with the same owner, that traded as B&M Modern Works from 2023 until 2026. Reviews from before the name change mention B&M.
How can I pay?
Cash, card or Zelle. Payment terms are written into your estimate before any work starts.
Is the estimate really free?
Yes. We come out, look at the space, and give you one written fixed price at no cost and with no obligation.
Can you resurface my deck instead of replacing it?
Often, yes. If the posts, beams and joists are sound, we can put new composite or cedar boards and new railing on the existing frame. We check the framing at the estimate and tell you honestly whether resurfacing or a rebuild is the right call.
Do you build second-storey and multi-level decks?
Yes. Elevated decks off upper floors, garage-top decks and multi-level decks on sloped lots are a big part of our work, including the stairs and railing.
Can you add planters, benches or lighting?
Yes. Built-in planters, seating and post or stair lighting can be framed into the deck. Tell us what you have in mind at the estimate.
Why do you set fence posts in concrete?
Our soil stays wet much of the year. Posts set in concrete stay plumb, resist heaving and keep the fence line straight, and they give gates a solid post to hang from so they don't sag.
How long does a cedar fence last?
Cedar naturally resists rot and insects. With concrete-set posts and a clean and seal every few years, a cedar fence typically lasts many years in the Northwest climate.
Can you build a gate wide enough for a car or trailer?
Yes. We build double drive gates for driveways and side yards, framed and hung so they open and close easily.
Which railing is lowest maintenance?
Black aluminum and glass need almost nothing beyond an occasional wash. Cable needs an occasional tension check. Cedar looks great but wants the same clean-and-seal as a cedar deck.
Can you replace just the railing on my deck?
Yes, as long as the deck itself is sound. We can swap old wood railing for aluminum, cable or glass and update the stairs at the same time.
Can you add a cover to my existing deck?
Often, yes. We look at the existing deck framing and the house wall at the estimate and tell you whether a cover can be added as-is or needs new posts and footings.
Will a cover make my house darker?
It depends on the design. We talk through roof style, height and pitch at the estimate so the cover keeps light reaching the windows behind it.
